For the last eleven years I’ve taught the novel Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. It is a story that has captivated my 4th graders year after year. This past November I attended the National Council for the Social Studies National Conference and I was introduced to the book The Yellow Star: The Legend of King Christian X of Denmark by Carmen Agra Deedy. This lovely story, inspired by true events and Lois Lowry’s novel, gives students a glimpse into the life of a heroic and brave leader during a very troubling time in our world. It is a perfect tie to Number the Stars, as it gives students an additional view on the war. I especially love the author’s note at the end. It determines between fact and fiction, but also challenges students to stand up to injustice and violence in their world. What a great message for the young minds in our classrooms.
Welcome to Adventures of a 4th Grade Classroom! Im a 4th grade teacher who loves motivating my students through a love of the great outdoors. I enjoy creating resources for teachers to use their classrooms. I also had the opportunity to be the 2017 Iditarod Teacher on the Trail and travel to rural Alaska by bush plane!
