This is my classroom. It is a place of joy and learning. A place where friendships are formed and memories are made. A place that is often full of laughter and smiles.

But today there were tears and there were lots of questions.

Teaching the day after tragedy is becoming all too familiar to me.

I’m ashamed to say I’ve never really taken action before, but I’ll be writing some letters this weekend and letting those in office how I, a veteran 4th grade teacher, feel about gun laws and mental health support. We need to make changes.

To my fellow teachers in the classroom, I’m sending you all the love and positive thoughts to make it through these last days of school.❤️

10 years ago today my life was changed forever. 10 years ago today my life was changed forever.

I had been teaching Iditarod for a few years and my students would write letters to mushers after the race.

In 2012 a local musher, Pat Moon, participated in the race and my student Jack wrote to him. Jack put a PS in his letter and asked Pat if he would visit our class since he was from Chicago too.

On May 11, 2012 I got a call from the school office telling me there was a musher in the office. I said, “You mean a letter from a musher?!”

The school nurse replied back, “No, a musher. Pat Moon.”

Soooo I ran into my partner teachers classroom and told her to get all the kids together in my room because, and I quote, “THERE IS A MUSHER! IN THE OFFICE!”

The day was absolute magical. And Pat truly sparked a love of Iditarod and all things Alaska I didn’t know was possible.

It was on this day that my goal to become Teacher on the Trail began, which then led to (now) 6 amazing trips to Alaska.

It’s amazing how one day can change everything. ❤️ So grateful for all the friends I’ve met through Iditarod and for the experiences it has brought into my life. 🐾
