September Book Suggestions
I Am One: A Book of Action by Susan Verde
I have always been a big fan of Susan Verde and Peter Reynolds, so it was natural for me to pre-order their newest book. I was NOT disappointed!
This book is inspired by a quote from the Dalai Lama, “Just as ripples spread our when a single pebble is dropped into water, the actions of individuals can have far-reading effects”. It takes students through small acts of kindness & generosity they can do, and how their one act can create a ripple effect that impacts so many people. Often times we don’t start things because we don’t feel we can make a difference. However, this book demonstrates the power of just ONE! One action. One movement. One person.
Every movement (every single one) started with just one person. So how will you change the world?
Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey by Maira Kalman
When I first started teaching, the events of September 11th were still very fresh in our minds and I wanted a way to honor all of those who lost their lives that day with my students. I found the book Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey by Maria Coleman to be a great fit for my 4th grade students. While my students were not around on September 11th, this is a wonderful picture book to honor all of those brave men and women who fought for us on that day. The illustrations in the book really portray the scariness and reality of that day. But what I love most about this book is how it shows our country coming together. It shows people from different walks of life coming together to literally save the lives of others. September 11 can always be a tough day for teachers when teaching about the attacks. Iβll be honest, I always tear up when reading this book, but I think that shows the reality of that day and it helps my students understand the importance of honoring this day each and every year.
